About using Web folders to access a backward-compatible document library

Although you can access backward-compatible document libraries from the portal site, installing the components for Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server integrates SharePoint Portal Server commands with Microsoft Windows Explorer and Microsoft Office applications.

Note  SharePoint Portal Server 2001 clients must install the client components for SharePoint Portal Server 2003 to access information in SharePoint Portal Server 2003 backward-compatible document libraries.

To use the client component of SharePoint Portal Server 2003 to configure crawl settings on a SharePoint Portal Server 2001 server, administrators must install the SharePoint Portal Server 2003 client components on every server in the server farm that doesn't already have the client components for SharePoint Portal Server 2001. This includes all of the SharePoint Portal Server 2003 servers.
