Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 and Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services both use content databases to store content for individual sites. However, SharePoint Portal Server uses a different content database for each site, while Windows SharePoint Services uses a content database for multiple sites.
You can view the complete list of database settings for the server farm in the Database Server Settings section on the Configure Server Topology and Component Assignments page. An asterisk (*) next to the server name in the site settings entry indicates the default database server for the content database for the next portal site created. All servers that have stored the content database for previously-created portal sites are also listed.
By default, when you create a virtual server, SharePoint Portal Server stores a corresponding content database on the same server that contains the configuration database.
