Modify shared Web Parts

Modify shared Web Parts

As a member of the Administrator site group, you can modify the shared Web Parts on the portal site. You can modify Web Parts for the Home, News, Topics, Sites, and My Sites pages.

  1. On the page that you want to edit, click Edit Page in the Actions list.
  2. In the shared view, click the arrow for the Web Part you want to modify, and then click Modify Shared Web Parts.

    You can also click Modify Shared Page at the top of the page, select Modify Shared Web Parts, and then click the Web Part you want to modify.

    Note  To switch to the shared view from the personal view, click Modify My Page and then click Shared View.

    The page opens in design mode with the selected Web Part outlined with a dotted yellow line. The properties for the Web Part are displayed in a pane that opens on the right side of the page.

  3. Edit the properties that you want to change. Properties specific to a Web Part appear at the top, followed by the properties found in all Web Parts. For information on a specific Web Part, see the documentation for that Web Part.

    Change the appearance of the Web Part

    1. In the pane for the Web Part, click Appearance.
    2. In the Title box, type a new title for the Web Part.
    3. In the Height section, click Yes to fix the height of the Web Part, click the units from the drop-down list, and then type the height limit in the text box.

      To adjust the height of the Web Part as the zone changes in size, click No.

    4. In the Width section, click Yes to fix the width of the Web Part, click the units from the drop-down list, and then type the width limit in the text box.

      To adjust the width of the Web Part as the zone changes in size, click No.

    5. In the Frame State section, click Minimized to show the Web Part minimized by default.

      Click Normal to show the Web Part fully expanded.

    6. In the Frame Style section, click the style you want from the drop-down list.

    Change the layout of the Web Part

    1. In the pane for the Web Part, click Layout.
    2. Click Visible on Page to show this Web Part on the page.
    3. In the Direction section, click the direction in which to orient the page.

      This is typically used to align the text correctly for Web Parts that use a language that runs in a different direction from the text in the other Web Parts on the page.

    4. In the Zone section, click the zone where you want to locate this Web Part.
    5. In the Part Order section, type the order in which this Web Part should be displayed within its zone relative to other Web Parts in the zone.

    Change the advanced properties of the Web Part

    1. In the pane for the Web Part, click Advanced.
    2. Select Allow Minimize, Allow Close, or Allow Zone Change to allow users without administrator rights to perform those actions for the Web Part. These options are selected by default.
    3. In the Detail Link box, type a location where users can find details about this Web Part.
    4. In the Description box, type a description for the Web Part.
    5. In the Help Link box, type a location where users can find Help for this Web Part.
    6. In the Icon File (Large) and Icon File (Small) boxes, type the locations of images to represent this Web Part.
    7. To target the Web Part to a specific audience of users, click Select, and then select an audience for the Web Part.
  4. Click Apply to make changes without closing the pane.
  5. When you are done making changes, click OK.
