You can create a custom document template in Microsoft Office 2003 with properties that match those of a document profile used with the backward-compatible document library. Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 can then automatically copy the custom properties on the template to the document profile when the document is checked in.
This transfer of prefilled custom Office properties to document profiles works only if the default document profile for the folder in which the document resides matches the properties in the Office template.
For example, you could create a Specifications template in Office that has Team, Project Manager, and Area properties automatically filled out. Next, in the backward-compatible document library, you could create a Specifications document profile with the same properties and assign that document profile to be the default document profile for the folder to which you want to add the document.
