Open a document in the backward-compatible document library

You can open and edit any file in the backward-compatible document library from the portal site, Microsoft Windows Explorer, or a Microsoft Office application.

When you save a document in a standard folder, you automatically publish any changes that you made to that document. The document is available for users with appropriate permissions to view.

To save changes to a document in an enhanced folder, you must first check out the file. If you have checked out the document, you can open the file and save changes to it. You must check in your document to use the enhanced document management features. If the document is checked out, a coordinator or author on the folder can open the latest draft version in read-only format. All other readers can open the last public version of the document in read-only format.
