Enable or disable enhanced folders in the backward-compatible document library
Enhanced folders support all document management features of the backward-compatible document library. If you enable enhanced folder settings, documents must be checked out for editing and checked back in after work is completed. Each time a user checks in a document, Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 adds a new version to the document history.
When you disable enhanced folder settings, thereby changing the enhanced folder to a standard folder, you disable check-in, check-out, versioning, and private document views for that folder.

- Ensure that the folder you want to configure is empty. You cannot enable check-in, check-out, and versioning for folders that contain documents.
- Right-click the folder you want to configure, and then click Properties.
- Click the General tab on the Properties page, and then select or clear the Enable Enhanced Folders check box.
- Click OK.
