Check a document out of the backward-compatible document library
If you want to work with a document that is stored in an enhanced folder, you must first check it out. You can check out the document from the backwards-compatible document library, the portal site, or a Microsoft Office application. When you check out a document, Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 creates a new draft version of the document for you to work on. Until you check in the document, your changes are not visible to other users in the document library.
Check out a document by using the portal site
- On the primary navigation bar of the portal site, click the link to your document library.
- On the Document Library page, locate the document that you want to check out. It may be located in a subfolder. If the document is located in a subfolder, open that folder to display its contents.
- Click the Show Actions link for the document. The Document Inspection page opens.
- Verify that the correct document is selected, and then click Check-Out.
- The Check Out Wizard page opens. The document is now checked out in your name. To work with the document, you must download a working copy to your computer.
- Right-click the document link, and then select the command that allows you to save the document to your computer.
Note The wording of the Save command may vary depending on your browser. Save, Save As, and Save Target As are common variations.
- In the Save dialog box, complete the necessary actions to download the document to your computer.
- Click OK.
- After the document has been downloaded, click OK at the bottom of the Check Out Wizard page.
Check out a document by using a Microsoft Office application
- On the File menu, click Open.
- In the Open dialog box, click the Web folders button.
- Click the folder that contains the document that you want to view, and then click Open.
- On the File menu, click Check out.
Check out a document by using Web folders
- In the document library, locate the document that you want to check out.
- Right-click the document, and then click Check out.
Notes
- After you check out a document, other users cannot edit the document or see your changes until you check it back in.
- If you later decide to check in the document without saving your changes, you can use the Undo Check-Out command on the Document Inspection page. You lose any changes made while you had the document checked out. The document reverts to the last checked-in version, and no version history is kept for the unsaved changes.
