About standard and enhanced folders in the backward-compatible document library
In the backward-compatible document library, Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 provides two types of folders for document storage. Enhanced folders support all document library features, including document profiles, public and private views for documents, check-in and check-out functions, document version history, and document publishing and approval processes. If you disable enhanced folder settings, you disable check-in, check-out, and versioning for that folder, changing the enhanced folder to a standard folder. SharePoint Portal Server immediately publishes all documents added to standard folders.
Standard folders
- SharePoint Portal Server publishes documents in standard folders automatically. After publication, these documents are available for searching and viewing on the portal site. There are no private document views in standard folders.
- Standard folders support regular Web folder functions and document profiles, which allow you to supply information about an item by using the profile form.

Enhanced folders
- Enhanced folders allow you to check in and check out documents from the document library. You can reserve the right to edit a document by checking it out. No other user can edit a document that is checked out. Until you check a document back in, other users in the folder cannot view your changes.
- Enhanced folders track the version history of each document, monitoring the number of times that you check in, check out, and publish a document.
- In addition to the basic enhanced folder features, the coordinator may allow users to publish documents from certain enhanced folders. In some cases, the coordinator may configure an approval process for a folder.
If the coordinator configures an approval process for the folder, the Publish command sends the document into a review-and-approval process before it is published. If the coordinator does not configure an approval process, the Publish command automatically publishes the document to the document library on the portal site. Readers on the portal site can search for and view published documents.
