Adding and Editing User Profile Properties

The set of properties that are included in the user profile might not contain all of the information about users in your organization that you want to include on the site.

You can add new properties to enhance those included in the user profile. You can also edit existing properties to change how those properties are displayed in the user profile.

You can also map properties to properties in Active Directory directory services.

Note  When you add or edit a property mapping, you must run a full import before the changes take effect.

Add a profile property

  1. In the User Profile Properties section on the Manage Profile Database page, click Add profile property.

    -or-

    On the View Profile Properties page, click New Property.

  2. On the Add User Profile Property page, type a name for the property in the Name box.

    Note  This name is not displayed on the user profile, but is used programatically whenever the property is accessed by Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003.

  3. Type a display name for the property in the Display Name text box. The display name is the name for the property that is shown on the personal and public views of the user profile.
  4. Select a property type in the Type list and if applicable, type the length in the Length text box.

    Important  These define the acceptable values for this property, and cannot be changed once the property is created.

  5. To display this property to the user and administrator on the personal and edit views of the user profile, select Show to user and administrator. To display this property to all users in the public view of the user profile, select Show to all users.
  6. Select or clear the Users can modify this property check box.
  7. To map this property to a property in Microsoft Active Directory directory service, select Map to Active Directory property, and then click the property on the list.
  8. Click OK.

Edit a profile property

  1. In the User Profile Properties section on the Manage Profile Database page, click View profile properties.
  2. On the View Profile Properties page, click the property you want to edit, and then click Edit.
  3. To change the display name for this property, type the new display name.
  4. To change whether this property is shown on user profiles, or only used for search and other purposes, select or clear the Show property on profile check box.
  5. To change whether to display this property to the user and administrator on the personal and edit views of the user profile, select or clear the Show to user and administrator check box. To display this property to all users in the public view of the user profile, select the Show to all users check box.
  6. To change whether users can modify this property in their user profiles, select or clear the Users can modify this property check box.
  7. To map this property to a property in Microsoft Active Directory directory service, select the Map to Active Directory property check box, and then click the property on the list. You can stop mapping this property by clearing the Map to Active Directory property check box.
